Gunmaking was considered an extremely skilled craft in the 18th century . Its because of this that firearms, including pistols and muskets, were all constructed by hand. Because of the hand to hand creations ,Every gun was a one-of-a-kind possession, and a gun broken could not be easily repaired. At the very least, the process was time consuming and expensive, as the gun had to be brought to a craftsman and repaired to order.
Eli Whitney tried his hand at first with the cotton gin but it didn't bring fame to the name so he did something better create interchangeable parts for a musket. with this new found idea Whitney was a big help to the government. the plan was simple, if they could get someone (native citizen) to build parts for our muskets that'll save us money from other countries.
the interchangeable parts was a big hit success in a American. one because of the easy access. two because the economy just begins to bloom and sky rocket through the air.
